If images and wireframes form the basic skeleton of a webpage, fonts could be regarded as muscles that facilitate movement and ensure readability. Given their indispensible nature, it becomes all the more important for a designer to select an appropriate font while constructing a webpage and this is probably the toughest decision of all.

A well-selected font needs to strike a balance between legibility and aesthetic appeal and to this effect there are some fonts that enjoy universal acceptance with regards to being used on a webpage. Following is a compilation of such fonts prepared with the intention of helping aspiring and amateur designers make the right choice –

Helvetica – Existing since 1957 when it was invented by Swiss designer duo namely Max Miedinger-Eduard Hoffman, Helvetica took no time in gaining acceptance on a worldwide scale and since then has acquired unparalleled visibility on the Internet. Ranging from social media to gadgets likes mobiles and tabs, this font graces almost every webpage courtesy of its versatile appeal as also the ability to fit into any form of media, big or small.

The only word of caution against this universal font is that because it is too tightly spaced, designers warn against it being applied to just any setting.

Frutiger – Designed by Adrian Frutiger, the strength of this font lies in its legibility wherein each alphabet is shaped with the intention of encouraging immediate recognition. Because the characters in this family are distinct rather than being too geometric or humanized, they carry a subtlety that renders them perfect for being used in magazines, brochures and user manuals.

Garamond – One of the reasons why this font is preferred pertains to the large number of variations that it offers, the latest being a version that was released in 1989 named Adobe Garamond. As a serif font, it can be applied to any content oriented setting ranging from web pages to books because it has the ability to add a degree of aesthetic appeal to large chunks of text.

Bodoni – Whenever there is a requirement of bold decorative text, Bodoni makes a great choice owing to its contrasting balance of thick and thin strokes. Created by an Italian designer of the same name, Bodoni is characterized by flat serifs and geometric structures of its characters, both of which render it perfect for being used for headlines.

Although this font might have risen to fame courtesy of being splashed on the poster of a gangster movie, it is preferred in this contemporary era owing to being more functional and condensed as compared to its more stylish counterparts like Baskerville.

Proxima Nova – Released in 2005, this font is a relatively new addition to the ever expanding family of font types courtesy of Mark Simmons. On being questioned, the designer explained the ethos underlying his creation as being a hybrid of modernism and geometric perfection that was the byword a couple of decades back. Available in six variations, this font is a cross of Helvetica and Akzidenz Grotesk and has been known to pop even when used as in the footer.

That said, which is the right font for your website? As long as the chosen font used on your website promotes easy readability and adds to the aesthetic appeal, it would be perfect for being used. While you can opt for a contrasting font for headings and sub-headings, an important thumb rule that comes into play is to refrain from using more than two or maximum three different fonts on any particular website.
